Contingency Fee

A payment arrangement where the lawyer’s fee is a percentage of the money recovered for you. If you don’t win, the attorney usually doesn’t charge a fee for their time.

In a personal injury case:

  • Common percentages might range from around 25–40%, depending on the case and stage of litigation.

  • Case expenses (filing fees, experts, medical records) may be handled separately.

What to know:

  • Always ask how fees and costs are calculated and deducted.

  • Get the fee agreement in writing before signing.
