Interpleader

A legal action where an insurance company or other stakeholder asks the court to decide who should get limited funds when multiple claims compete.

In a personal injury case:
Common when policy limits are small and multiple injured people are making claims.

What to know:

  • The insurer deposits the money with the court and asks to be released from further liability.

  • Injured parties then argue over how to divide the limited funds.
